John Ferda, 87, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away at 5:46 PM on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, WV.

John was born on April 13, 1928 in Wellsburg, WV. He was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Blas) Ferda.

John served in the United States Navy during peacetime. He retired from Weirton Steel Corp. after 40 years of service as a millwright. Many will remember John for his love of baseball and basketball through mentoring children. He coached for Bethany and Franklin little league baseball, Weirton basketball and developed the golf program at Highland Springs Golf Course. John was a member of the Wellsburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John Alan Ferda, a brother, Michael Ferda, four sisters, Mary Evanko, Margaret Ferda, Pauline Triplett, Wilma LaVine.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Betty (Elson) Ferda, of Wellsburg, WV, four children, Brian (Vi-Eva) Ferda of Wheeling, WV, Barbara (John) Lyonett of Weirton, WV and Beverly (Mike) Wilker of St. Mary’s OH and William (Cindy) Ferda of Wellsburg, WV, a daughter-in-law, Marilyn J. Ferda, of Mount Hope, WV, nine grandchildren, Jonell Carver, John Ferda Jr., Amanda Ferda, Eric and Jay Lyonett, Michael and Matthew Leitschuh, William Jr. and Jeffrey Ferda, four great grandchildren, four sisters, Emma Bullock, Helen Gorby, Janie Koniski, and Sue Hanlin, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM and again on Thursday, December 17, 2015 from 10:00 until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the Chambers Funeral Home, 1030 Main Street, Wellsburg, WV (304) 737-3551 with Reverend Carl Tribbett, officiating.

Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV, with military honors by the United States Navy and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.
