Obituary for "Howdy" Howard Campbell Verner

“Howdy” Howard Campbell Verner, 77, of Follansbee, WV, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Trinity Medical Center, Steubenville, OH, with his family at his side.

Howdy was born on November 17, 1938 in Follansbee, WV. He was the son of the late Howard “Buss” and Elva (Campbell) Verner.

He was a 1956 graduate of Follansbee High School and retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp. - Utilities Dept. with 37 years of service. In addition, he was owner/operator of Howdy’s Dari-Owl for 47 years and Howdy’s Owl’s Nest Café since 2004. He liked to say that he helped put many kids through college. Howdy’s employees returned to work for him summer after summer through their high school and college years. He considered them his extended family. Howdy was a great boss and was loved by all.

Howdy enjoyed sports and followed many athletic activities at Brooke High School. He loved working with children and through the years coached and sponsored many youth organizations. He was an original sponsor and coach in the Follansbee Youth Basketball League for 29 years and was a positive influence in many young lives. He was a member of Follansbee Community Days Committee and sponsor of the annual Car Show. He was named 2010 Businessman of the Year by the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce.

Howdy is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Jane (Cross) Verner, three caring children, Shannon McCracken (Todd) Blake of Dothan, AL, Marc Verner of Greensboro, NC, and Brian (Stephanie) Verner of Follansbee, WV, two grandsons, Logan and Travis Blake of Dothan, AL, a sister, Marvel (Clarence) Virtue of Follansbee, WV, a brother-in-law, Tom Cross of Lewisburg, WV, a sister-in-law, Susan (John) Maluski of Palm Coast, FL and several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 1:00 until time of Memorial Service at 2:00 PM at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee, WV (304) 527-1717 with his friend, Pastor Joseph F. Cuomo of the Follansbee Christian Assembly, officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Follansbee, WV.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brooke High School Scholarship Fund, C/O James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee, WV in Howdy’s name to support the youth of the area through education.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Weirton Medical Center Home Health Team and the nurses and physicians who took such wonderful care of him at Trinity Medical Center.
