Obituary for James McElroy

James  McElroy
James McElroy, 70 of Follansbee, WV, passed away at 2:40 PM on Friday, June 1, 2018 at his residence under the care of his family and Valley Hospice.

James was born on December 11, 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the son of the late Orlando and Pearl (Smith) McElroy.

After graduating with his Bachelor Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, James started his professional career as a 3rd grade teacher at Hooverson Heights Elementary School. James earned his Master Degree then became Principal of Hooverson Heights in 1989 for 11 years. While under his direction, Hooverson Heights became a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and he received numerous other awards during his education career. In 2000 he left Hooverson Heights and became the Principal of JA Allard Elementary School, Moon Twp, PA.

James enjoyed golf as a pastime playing in numerous Pittsburgh Leagues and also in Florida with all of his International friends. If you need to find James, the golf course would be a good place to look. In addition to golf, he acted and directed plays through the Steubenville Players, Town Gate Theater and Brooke Hills Park Play House. James did voice over work at Studio L, Weirton, WV for McMillan and Scholastic Book Companies. Many will remember James for his wonderful spirit of laughter, being an insane sports fan of all things Pittsburgh, playing jokes, and coaching his children’s teams; but most of all, for being a true role model for children through lasting impressions.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Mick McElroy and his father-in-law, William “Bill” Metzger.

James is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane (Metzger) McElroy of Follansbee, WV, two children, Lara Woodrum and her husband, Matthew of Charleston, WV and Scott McElroy of Follansbee, WV, a granddaughter, Gillian Woodrum, four nephews including Michael McElroy of Pittsburgh, that was more like a brother and his wife’s family, mother-in-law, Isabell Metzger, two sisters-in-law, Carol Lynn and her husband, Bill of Wellsburg, WV and Barbara Lauck and her husband, Gene of Center Twp, PA and family.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, June 4, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Tuesday, June5, 2018 from 9:00 until time of Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304)527-1717 with Reverend Carl Tribett and Reverend Annie Parker, officiating.

Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV
