Obituary for Dulcie May (Hartzer) McVicker

Dulcie May (Hartzer) McVicker, 93 of Follansbee, WV, went to join God and be united with her husband, James and other loved ones at 12:55 PM on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, WV.

Dulcie was was born on November 2, 1924 in Bunbury, Western Australia. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Maude (Cook) Hartzer. She was one of eleven children. Dulcie had a tough life through war and citizenship, but remained steadfast in the Lord. Her working life began during WWII, she worked in a munitions factory even though she had supported herself since age 14 as a housekeeper and waitress. In 1944, Dulcie met her husband, James , stationed in Fremantle with the United States Navy. They married that same year. Their first daughter, Sandra, was born in Perth. After the war, James was sent home and in May of 1946, on a transport ship carrying 200 war brides and 400 children, was reunited with his wife and child. Dulcie and her husband resided in his hometown of Follansbee and had three more children, James II, David and Dulcie. She was proud to become a US Citizen on her own time in 1977. Many will remember Dulcie for her love to mow grass and plant flowers; but most of all, she loved to care for her grandchildren. She loved going to sleep listening to hymns and was a dedicated and faithful member of the Church of Christ, Follansbee, WV.

In addition to her parents, Dulcie was preceded in death by her husband, James McVicker in 1993, nine siblings, Ken, Bill, Dick, Bob, Ben, Tom, Jim and John Hartzer and Frances Ganfield.

Dulcie is survived by her four children, Sandra Barber and her husband, Richard of Colliers, WV, James McVicker and his wife, Barbara of Colliers, WV, David McVicker and his wife, Brenda of North Carolina and Dulcie Cattrell and her husband, Bob of Weirton, WV, 14 grandchildren, Warren, Michael and Jason Scott, Gabreal and Samuel Barber, Brian and Christopher McVicker, Heather Vojvodich, Matthew McVicker, Shirley Mansfield, Craig Hendershot, Jimmy Anderson, and Alex and Nicholas Cattrell, 17 great grandchildren, Jessica, Amelia and Andrew Scott, Connor and Jaycee Davis, Joey, Jacob and Jess Vojvodich, Ben, Patrick and Avery McVicker, Annamarie and Willow Mansfield, Breanna and Craig Hendershot and Nicole and Nathan Anderson and a sister, Esme Hortin of Australia and numerous nieces and nephews both stateside and in Australia.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304)527-1717 with William “Bill” Cooper, officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Colliers, WV next to her dear husband, James.
