Obituary for Robert Clark Byers Sr.

Robert Clark Byers, Sr., 72 of Weirton, WV passed away Friday, April 8,
2016 at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA.

Robert was born November 6, 1943 in Follansbee, WV. He was the son of the late Frank and Winnie (Johnston) Byers. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his infant son, Robert C. Byers, Jr., a brother, Frank Byers, Jr. and a sister, Kathy Kerns.

Bob was a huge sports fan and preferred the purity of high school and college athletics. Sports played a big part of his life. As a boy, he was a Little League phenom known for his home run streaks and pitching skills. The local press dubbed him "Follansbee's Little Babe Ruth" and over 50 years later, he was still recognized by his peers. Bob was a 1961 graduate of Follansbee High School and always proud of the Blue Wave football history.

Bob spent the last part of his life as the owner/operator of Byers Marathon in New Cumberland before health issues forced him to retire. He took great pleasure in talking and joking with his customers and made a lot of friends. Bob was man of many skills who could repair your car, tune up a lawn mower, remodel a bathroom or bake a great cherry pie but his greatest gift was his loyalty and love for his family.

Bob is survived by his two children, Robin Byers and Chris (Julie) Byers of Weirton and his three beautiful grandchildren who were the loves of his life, Kylie, Chrissy and Cooper Byers; a sister, Ruth Ash of Lima, OH; a brother, Richard (Rita) Byers; a sister-in-law, Betty Byers, all of Weirton, WV; his former wife, Brenda Ice of Weirton, WV; several nieces and nephews and his cat, Piglet, who was his loyal companion.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, April 11, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM and again on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee, WV (304)5271717 with family member Dan Cooper officiating.

Interment will be held privately at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV
