Obituary for Edith Mae Cooper (McDevitt)

Edith Mae  Cooper (McDevitt)
Edith Mae Cooper, 92, of Follansbee, WV, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at her home. Edith was born October 10, 1924 in Mingo Junction, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late James McDevitt and Pearl (Risher) Schilling. In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Albert Cooper and a baby sister, Jean. They were married 46 years.

Edith enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and proudly served in offices located in Washington, D.C. She was an active and attending member of the Hooverson Heights Church of Christ, where she was involved in Faithful Followers and Sunday school classes. Edith had worked in offices of the Hub of Steubenville, OH and Wesvaco, Wellsburg, WV. Many will remember her for her volunteer work at the Wellsburg Public Library and election polls in Brooke County. She attended social events at the Brooke County Senior Center, Fun Seekers, and Gadabouts. Edith enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, and time with her family and friends. She was famous for her Angel Food cakes.

Edith is survived by her daughters, Rebecca L. “Becky” (William) Ward of Wintersville, Ohio and Linda J. (Richard) Kimble of Hopedale, Ohio; three grandchildren, James “JT” (Laramie) Kimble, Jeffrey (Katherine) Kimble and Lindsay R. Ward and two great granddaughters, Kanin and Emmeline Kimble, with a third great grandchild expected this year. She is also survived by a brother, John C. (Lucille) Reynolds of Mansfield, CT.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, February 7 from 3:00-7:00 PM at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304) 527-1717 and again at the Hooverson Heights Church of Christ on Wednesday, February 8, from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, George Henry, officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Colliers, WV; Military honors by the United States Marine Corps and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.
